I
Dear CCRA Member:
After an unexpected and extended
absence, Parliament reconvened on March 3, 2010. However, even though
the House of Commons was prorogued, I continued to work on your behalf
both in the riding and in Ottawa. With a new budget before Parliament,
we will now see if it will help Canadians, create jobs and provide badly
needed economic growth.
The Haitian Earthquake Relief
Effort:
The international effort aimed at
rebuilding Haiti after its devastating earthquake will be considerable.
If you wish to donate to any relief organization you can obtain contact
information from the Department of Foreign Affairs at:
http://www.international.gc.ca
Canada determined that the Jacmel region of Haiti will be the focal
point of our aid. Locally, The Arms of Jesus Children’s Mission, which
is based in Pickering, has been operating in this region of Haiti for
several years. I have had the opportunity to observe the work of this
organization and I can attest to the dedicated work they do.
I
ask constituents to consider supporting the work of this local NGO in
Haiti. They may be reached at:

Canadians Rights Abroad:
On February 9, 2010 I hosted a
roundtable forum on Parliament Hill concerning the rights of Canadians
rights abroad and the government’s responsibilities to citizens.
Several of my caucus colleagues
joined a panel of experts ranging from law professors, human rights
lawyers and a former foreign affairs ministerial advisor who provided
their input on ways in which the process of serving and assisting
Canadian abroad can be approved.
A Changing Refinery Picture:
As I’ve suggested since 2008, the
hyper valuation of crude driven by the presence of institutional
investors – coinciding with an economic downturn in the United States –
has left many US refineries with product that isn’t needed. Moreover,
new refineries being built in Asia could present new challenges to the
refinery picture in North America by effectively squeezing refinery
margins.
With the decline in refineries
stateside and the exaggeration of refinery margins in Canada typically
between 30% and 40% higher, the stage is set for higher prices for fuels
in the coming months.
Keep in Touch:
Please do not hesitate to provide
me with your views on the issues that are before our country; or to
contact me on any questions or concerns you may have relating to the
federal government.
Sincerely,
