Report from Ron Moeser – Toronto City Councillor , Ward 44

A New French Catholic Elementary School

In early May, the Director of Education for the French Catholic School Board, and two of his senior officials met with me in our Ward 44 Constituency Office. It was an opportunity to learn about the application to build a new kindergarten to grade 6 French language school in our community on Meadowvale Road.

The officials walked through the site prior to its purchase and have a good understanding of the property. They explained that the school building plans had been prepared to reflect the slope of the land and not create sight lines that block the view of homeowners in the area. The Director of Planning and Facilities from the French Catholic Board also shared with us the architectural drawings of the exterior and interior of the proposed school.

The school will be constructed to house approximately 194 pupils and include a full day kindergarten and day care program for youngsters ranging in age from 2 to 12 years. Its expected enrolment for the first few years will be 120-130 pupils. The youngsters will be transported from across southern Scarborough in seven small school buses that will unload their passengers in the turnaround located well back from Meadowvale Road.

I shared with these officials that some residents had come to our office with several concerns about their purchase of this site just north of Wanita Park. It was agreed by all of us that a working group should be set up including representatives of the CCRA executive and local residents.  By the time you receive this newsletter, your Association will have had an opportunity to review the plans, question the officials, and respond to the application submitted by the French language school board.

This particular piece of property was put under site plan control by the City to ensure the community has input on this proposal.

Lawrence Ave. Reconstruction

The much needed rehabilitation and resurfacing of Lawrence Avenue will begin in mid June and continue to November 2010.  This is the second phase and will include the section from Bennett Rd. to Kingston Rd.   Lawrence Ave from Bennett Road to Chesterton Shores is tentatively scheduled for rehabilitation in the 6-10 year Transportation Capital Works Program.

Community Clean-Up Day

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the residents that took part in our annual Community Clean-up Day on Saturday, April 24th.  As usual, we had a great turn out of dedicated volunteers in all areas of Ward 44 for this worthy cause.  I would like to express a special thanks to the Port Union Seniors and staff that did a wonderful job organizing the event at the Port Union Community Centre.  Keep up the great work!

Community Environment Day

Please note that this year’s annual Community Environment Day has been rescheduled to Thursday, August 26 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  As in the past the event will be held in the beautiful Colonel Danforth Park.  So gather up your unwanted clutter, clean out your garage and visit us.  There will also be free garden compost available for residents and City staff will be on-hand to assist you and answer questions.  Don’t forget to stop by my tent/table for a free hot dog.

Port Union Waterfront Festival - Saturday, June 12, 2010

Now into its third year, the Port Union Waterfront Festival has continued to attract families from our community and from across Scarborough. The Festival takes place at the Village Common and the Waterfront Trail at the bottom of Port Union Rd. just south of Lawrence Ave.

In 2008 approximately 60 displays of businesses and community organizations were spread throughout the Village Common and the waterfront. This number grew to almost 100 displays last year with an attendance of over 6000 people.  This year, the Waterfront Festival Committee is planning to offer more free rides and entertainment for the whole family.

This is a wonderful opportunity for residents to celebrate our community and our beautiful waterfront.  I hope to see you there.

Ron Moeser

Councillor, Ward 44

Scarborough East

Please note: In last months CCRA Newsletter, the first article in my report identified the address of a property as 369 Lawrence Ave.  It should have read 369 Lawson Rd.  I apologize for any confusion
