Happy
New Year to everyone and welcome to 2010!
On
Saturday January 30th our annual Winterfest will take place
from 11:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Port Union Recreation Centre.
The theme of this years festivities will be the Winter Olympics. More
details on Winterfest are on page 4. The CCRA co- sponsors this event
along with The West Rouge Sports and Recreation, Port Union Seniors and
the City of Toronto. This is a wonderful community outing for the whole
family. Please mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend.
In late
November I attended the quarterly meeting of the Port Union Waterfront
Trail Working Committee. Items discussed at the meeting included an
update on construction progress for Phase 2. Phase 2 construction is on
schedule with 5 of the 6 “headlands” constructed and is on target for
completion in early 2011. There is considerable work that has been
carried out on the Pickering side of the Rouge River. A viewing platform
has been constructed that will form a link between the Toronto Section and
the trail continuing eastward into Pickering.
With the
New Year comes some changes in our CCRA executive. Ed Gilmore will be
taking over Newsletter Distribution. Clary Dias will assume the
Conservation chair position and Paul Lewkowicz will be Planning chair.
A
reminder that we are offering a scholarship for a student graduating from
a secondary school who lives in our community and will be going on to a
post secondary school. Application details are contained on our web site
www.ccranews.com Deadline for applications is April 26th,
2010.
Mark your
calendars for Saturday March 27th. We are
planning a beer tasting evening featuring several of our local micro
breweries. More details for this evening to come next month.
