I want to
thank everyone who attended the celebration marking our 60th
anniversary as well as the 25th anniversary celebrations of the
Port Union Seniors, the opening of the Port Union Rec. Centre, and the
Port Union Library. Much to celebrate! Events to mark these
special occasions were held throughout the week of September 21-26.
At the opening of the celebrations on Monday September 21, the Hon. Dan
McTeague MP presented the association with a certificate recognizing
CCRA’s 60th anniversary. Also present were the Hon.
John McKay MP Scarborough Guildwood (former MP for Scarborough
East), and Councillor Ron Moeser, along with representatives from the City
of Toronto Forestry Parks and Recreation Department as well as the Toronto
Library.
This
month marks the actual anniversary of the founding of CCRA. In
November 1949 a group of individuals who resided in the mainly rural area
of the eastern edge of Scarborough Township met at Centennial Road Public
School to form a community association.
Since
then, both the area and the association have evolved into an active
residential community that is now part of the City of Toronto. A lot
has happened in our community over the past 60 years. Extensive
residential development has taken place and thanks to the efforts of the
association this development has been guided by the planning principles of
the Centennial Planning bylaws passed by Scarborough Council in the early
1960’s. Adam’s Park, the Port Union Recreation Centre, the
Waterfront Trail, and the Village Common to name only a few amenities that
are the direct result of the CCRA’S active involvement in our community.
The
association is run entirely by volunteers from within the community.
To the many people who over the past 60 years have volunteered to serve on
the executive, canvass for memberships, deliver the newsletter, or
help out at community events I say THANK YOU. Without your help and
support
our
community would not be what it is today.
On Sept
22nd I attended the quarterly meeting of the Port Union
Waterfront Trail Working Committee. The meeting was a site visit to
view phase 2 construction and provide input on some of the features for
this part of the trail. I am pleased to report that construction of
phase 2 of the trail is proceeding on schedule and will soon reach Rouge
Beach. There are some different features of the phase 2
section that will make it different from phase 1. The phase 2
section will cross the Rouge River and join with the Waterfront Trail that
is presently under construction in the City of Pickering.
Looking
ahead to December there will be the annual Community Christmas Carol
Concert on December 13th at 7:30 p.m. at St Dunstan’s Church on
Lawson Road. This is a community concert and everyone is welcome to
attend.
