President’s Message
This month we will be celebrating Earth Day on April 30th.
Activities get underway at the Port Union Recreation Centre at 10 A.M.
This is the one day of the year set aside to do something in our
community for the environment. The main outdoor activities will be
cleaning up the areas where debris and garbage have collected over the
winter. We are also planning a display and information session in the
gym sponsored by Live Green Toronto. Staff will be available, following
the outdoor cleanup, for discussion about how to make our city greener.
There will be a barbeque, come and have your lunch in the gym and find
out what you can do to help the environment. This is an event for all
members of your family so plan to attend and pitch in to make our
community clean and environmentally friendly. Further Earth Day details
are contained elsewhere in this newsletter.
Don’t forget, high school students have until April 26 at 9:30 p.m.
to submit their applications for our $ 1000 William A. Dempsey
scholarship. Details and the application for the scholarship are
contained on our web site.
In early March I attended the quarterly meeting of the Port Union
Waterfront Trail Committee. All fill, rubble and shoreline material i.e
armour stone, rip rap and cobbles have been delivered to site. A
section of the trail heading west from Rouge Beach will be open for
limited use this summer. The official opening for the complete section
of Phase 2 is scheduled for the summer of 2012.
Next month we will be launching our annual membership campaign.
Membership Chair Betty Karsh is busy organizing this year’s campaign.
There is a list in this newsletter of streets requiring canvassers.
Please consider volunteering to be a canvasser, this is our only fund
raising event for the year.
